Write a testable safety-function specification

Start with the hazardous event and the intended response.

Reviewed 2026-11-04 · Engineering interpretation · authoring reviewed

Independently authored engineering commentary. Specialist technical review and native-language translation review remain open.

Define the boundary

For an original design worksheet, give each function a stable ID. State the hazard, persons exposed, operating mode, initiating condition, controlled equipment, required response and safe state. Include a bounded response time only when its basis is available. Identify relevant robot and integration standards by edition.

Connect to a test

Add fault behavior, reset and restart conditions, assumptions and an observable acceptance criterion. For example, the guard-door case has separate stop and restart-inhibition records. A reviewer should be able to connect each requirement to an analysis or a proposed test and see which input is still missing.
